Mirpur City | Azad Kashmir | Full Walking Tour Video

Mirpur, Azad Kashmir Location & General Overview Mirpur is a city in the Pakistani-administered region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), in the disputed Kashmir region. It serves as the capital of the Mirpur District. Elevation: ~458 m above sea level. Population: As of 2017, the city had a population of about 124,352. Nickname: Often called “Little England” or “Mini London” due to the high number of its diaspora in the UK and visible UK-influences in the city. Historical Context The area was originally inhabited and the city is said to have been founded around 1640 AD by the local Ghakhar chief Miran Shah Ghazi. During the 1947–48 conflict (first Kashmir war), Mirpur was the scene of intense fighting and change of control, becoming part of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The construction of the Mangla Dam (one of the largest earth-fill dams globally) in the 1960s caused large changes: the old town was submerged, many residents were displaced, and large waves of migration to the UK followed. Economy & Diaspora Influence The large Mirpuri diaspora in the UK (and other overseas locations) plays a major role in the local economy, via remittances, investment, and visible material culture. Many homes, businesses and infrastructure bear the effect of overseas capital. Industry: The local economy includes manufacturing in areas such as foam, polypropylene, synthetic yarn, textiles, marble, garments, etc. Tourism & natural resources: Being adjacent to the Mangla Dam and lake, the area has scenic value and recreational potential. Culture, Demographics & Language Languages: Official language is Urdu; commonly spoken are Pahari-Pothwari (Potohari dialects), Punjabi influences, Gojri, Kashmiri and English. Demographics: The region has seen migration & settlement from surrounding areas, and historically had Hindu and Sikh populations before 1947. Cultural events: For example, the “Saif Ul Malook Festival” in April celebrates the Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh. Poetry events (Mushaira) in Pahari language are also held. Infrastructure & Environment Transport: There is no railway currently; the nearest station is in Dina. The nearest airports are Islamabad (~130 km away) and Sialkot (~110 km away). Shopping and urban development: Mirpur is known as the “shopping capital” of AJK, with modern malls, plazas, and markets. Challenges: Despite development, some infrastructure and industrial-quality issues remain. Environment & climate: Summers are quite hot; winters are moderately cold. Rain mainly comes during monsoon; higher altitudes may see snowfall. 》If you enjoy this video, please like and share it. 》Don't forget to subscribe to this channel & press the bell 🔔 icon. 》And keep watching 'Travelers 》To get more interesting videos 𝐒𝐔𝐁𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐁𝐄 𝐍𝐎𝐖:    / travelarc   》Get the Official Travelarc Merch https://travelarc.creator-spring.com 》Thank you very much for watching our video, I hope u guys enjoy the video, If you want to watch more videos of us please like share this video and subscribe to my channel Travelarc. 》Disclaimer: Don't Download or copy Anything From This Channel. Ramkot Fort: A medieval fort in the district, with historical significance. Local markets and scenic hill-areas around Mirpur. Why Visit or Study Mirpur? Offers a unique blend of traditional Kashmiri/hill culture plus modern overseas-influence due to its diaspora links. Important case study of how migration and remittances can transform urban development. Good base for exploring the southern AJK region, including natural landscapes and water-based recreation. For diaspora (especially British-Mirpuris), it holds emotional, cultural and heritage significance.
