These are cherished moments for both Adine and Khanyisa, reaffirming that bond that was built over years during Khanyisa’s rehabilitation and integration. A bond built through physical touch, a hand resting on Khanyisa’s tummy as she slept on the hay bed of her nursery. Through the trust shown as Khanyisa stood over Adine and let her human mum rub her peach fuzz skin, like a mother elephant caressing the calf with her trunk. While there is another little elephant vying for Adine’s attention these days, with Phabeni’s arrival at HERD, Adine still has a deep love bond with Khanyisa that might always be there. Even when Adine arrives at the waterhole and doesn’t utter a word, Khanyisa can smell her and will come over speedily, excited to see her dear carer. It’s a beautiful day at the dam, hot and just right for splashing in the water. Timisa, Pisa and Zindoga all get stuck in, with the other her members enjoying drinks from the edges. Meanwhile, our carers watch on from the shade of the bushes and trees, always keeping an eye over the elephants.
