Although famed for their naval prowess, the Illyrians were also famed warriors. As a result of centuries of tribal warfare, Illyrian weapons and armour became highly advance and would prove to be highly effective when in combat against their neighbours. Despite having a highly advanced warrior culture, Breast armour was very rare. A type of breast armour made from a bronze plate is known to have been in use in Northern Illyria, however all date to before 500 BC. Other Illyrians did also use breast armour, but this was sparing and sometimes, in the case of Glasinac Illyrians, stretching the definitions of what classes as Breast armour. The Glasinacs version of breast armour was simply a jacket made of cloth or leather with parts made from bronze. However, the more common type of breast armour was a simple disc-shaped breastplate of around 10 cms in diameter. Another type of armour used by the Illyrians was Bronze Greaves. It is likely that before using bronze, the Illyrians used leather greaves, however, nothing is known about this armour. Bronze Greaves first appeared among the Illyrians in southern Illyria during the 7th century BC. Greaves, however, were commonly only used by wealthy warriors and were often highly decorated. In terms of helmets, the most popular and widespread helmet was the Illyrian helmet. Despite being labelled the Illyrian helmet, the helmet actually originated in Ancient Greece, only being called the Illyrian helmet as early finds of this helmet were from the Illyria region. This helmet provided good protection, utilizing strong cheek guards as well as two ridges at the top of the helmet to deflect blows. However, unlike a majority of greek helmets, the Illyrian helmet did not hamper vision, however, the warriors hearing was severely impaired when wearing it. Eventually, this helmet was used by not just the Illyrian and Greeks, but also the Etruscans and Scythians. The most common type of shields utilized by the Illyrians was a circular shield, however, northern Illyrians often used an oval or rectangular shield. This shield was often small and was decorated with embedded circles and semicircles on the sides. The oval shield used by the northern Illyrians was most likely a shield that the Illyrians borrowed from the celts when the Celts invaded the Balkans in the 4th-3rd centuries. This shield was made out of wood and was held via a handle in the inside of a strong metal boss in the centre of the shield. Illyrians primarily used a short single-edged curved sword called the Sica. The Sica was developed during the bronze age and was based on an ancient Greek design. This sword was originally a curved sword with a blade about 16-18 inches long. This sword was designed to get around an opponents shield in order to slash or stab him in the back. Despite this sword being used largely in the Balkans, the Romans regarded this sword as being distinctly Illyrian. Spears were also commonly used by the Illyrians. Sources: En.wikipedia.org. (2018).
