You play as Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and one of the last surviving members of his clan, who must protect Tsushima Island after it is invaded by the Mongol army led by Khotun Khan. At first, Jin tries to fight with traditional samurai honor, but he quickly realizes the Mongols cannot be defeated that way. To save his people, he begins adopting unconventional and stealthy tactics—poison, assassinations, fear tactics—becoming the legendary warrior known as the Ghost. Throughout the story, Jin struggles between his samurai code of honor (upheld by his uncle, Lord Shimura, who raised him) and the ruthless but effective tactics of the Ghost, which many samurai see as dishonorable. This conflict creates a deep rift between Jin and his uncle. Gameplay combines samurai combat (sword duels, parries, standoffs) with stealth mechanics (assassinations, smoke bombs, grappling, archery). The world is vast and beautiful, featuring forests, mountains, shrines, villages, and battlefields, with side quests and activities like freeing villages, composing haiku, and honoring shrines.
