Transcript : Welcome to Mudding 101. Today we are going to be talking about the most important mod to get done to your stock 4x4 before your go mudding. If you have to choose only one mod, don’t go with tires, a lift, or lockers. The most important thing for your 4x4 to have is actually a winch! No, it won’t improve your performance in the mud, but no matter how much you invest in suspension or traction you can still get stuck! Don’t believe us? Just look at this guy… So now that you’re looking for a winch there still a few questions you need to ask. The most important one is what capacity you need. Generally speaking you want to get a winch that is 1.5 times your rigs Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, but that’s just the minimum recommendation! Since you’re planning on getting stuck in the mud, you’re better off with getting a winch that has double your GVWR in capacity. Once you’ve found a few winches that meet your capacity needs another good question to ask is if you want Steel or Synthetic Rope. Synthetic Rope is the popular option at off-road events because it is lightweight and doesn’t become a projectile when it breaks. It is also very flexible and easy to handle. On the other hand, Steel is durable and easy to maintain, but it is also the heavier of the two options. Besides the rope, also think about whether or not you want a remote or integrated solenoid box. If you get a remote control box it gives you more versatility but an integrated box can offer a more preferable aesthetic and better water proofing. Finally, once you’ve narrowed down your winches be sure to go with one that has a reputable name. You don’t want to rely on some no-name brand to get your rig out of the mud. Brands like Warn or Smittybilt are good places to start. Now that you’ve picked out your winch. Think about how you want to mount it. If you are planning on keeping your stock bumper you can simply get a winch mounting plate, but you may want to also consider getting an aftermarket bumper that supports a winch. If you have long plans for your 4x4, a new bumper and winch is the best place to start.
