As flames destroy much of Eastbourne Pier, fire protection expert John Ivison explains why the structures often succumb to fierce blazes. A huge fire destroyed much of Eastbourne Pier on Wednesday afternoon, with at least 80 firefighters battling to save the iconic Victorian landmark. The blaze gutted the arcade building leaving an empty shell. The Grade II* listed pier was successfully evacuated with no reports of injuries. There have been several pier fires around the UK in the last few years. In 2008, Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier was destroyed by fire, Hastings Pier was almost destroyed by fire in 2010 and in 2003, West Pier in Brighton succumbed to flames. Fire protection expert John Ivison of John Ivison & Associates Ltd explains why these structures are susceptible to fires.
