ETFs or Exchange Traded Funds are a great investment vehicle to make use of, especially for beginners. In this video I explain the key things you should look out for when analysis and selecting the ETFs that you want to invest in. ETFs come with a number of advantages, such as being readily diversified, less time required to analyse and research them than individual stocks, and it is easy to apply to Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) method with them. Nevertheless, you do need to understand what exactly you are investing in. There are four key things that I will look at when choosing ETFs to invest in. The name of an ETF says a lot about it, such as who the asset management firm behind the fund is, whether it replicates a stock market index or contains companies from a certain sector, whether it is compliant with EU safe investing standards, if it is a leveraged or inverse ETF, and the currency at which it is listed at on the stock market. By looking at the historic returns of an ETF, you can get an idea of how it can be expected to perform in different stages of the economy, and in particular, how well it replicates the performance of specific stock market indices if it is an index tracking etf. It's important to understand what companies and assets are in the ETF, as they will ultimately determine how the ETF performs. You might also want to have a look at the composition of the assets by sector or by geography. Names can also be misleading at times, so it is good to double check and be sure of the assets within the ETF. ETF fees can vary greatly depending on the expected return of the fund, whether it is actively or passively managed, and whether it is focused on a particular sector of niche. You need to weigh up the expense ratio to returns to make sure that the ETF expenses are not diminishing your return on investment.
