When you have to identify a beach that stands out in The Gambia, sitting at the Cape Point Hotel, looking across the mouth of the Gambia River, to distant Barra – and that is when you realise the beauty of the clean and pristine sands where the Atlantic converges in the distance, and as your gaze sweeps from the cape to this little bay that curves all along, following the coastal highway leading to Denton Bridge. The iconic Sunset beach Hotel (though unfortunately currently closed) sits strategically located at the tip of the cape, and as you move along the beach, the cleanliness and saplings of coconut trees strike you – and you see the efforts of a community-based tree planting and beach cleaning groups – The Bakau Environmental Movement deserves kudos for constantly clearing up litter and planting palms and coconut trees that future generations will enjoy the fruits of. The large Ocean Bay Hotel brags with its palm trees and popular sunbeds, with the number of fruit vendors and juice shops bordering the driveway that takes you past the horse stables, where you can get a ride to take you along this long pristine beach.
