We bought and live in a 100-year-old traditional house in the Japanese countryside. Recently, I noticed marks on the wall that look like water had been dripping. To find the cause, I ultimately decided to make a large hole in the ceiling. The attic was full of 100 years’ worth of dirt and dust. When I looked into the attic, I found that the clay used in the walls had shrunk, leaving gaps. It seems likely that rain was coming in through those gaps. The good news was that there didn’t appear to be any leakage from the roof itself. Also, there was no smell so it probably wasn’t animal urine. Next time, I’ll try filling in the gaps in the walls!
