Ever wondered how to make high-end custom curtains without spending a fortune? We take you through sewing our own living room curtains from start to (almost) finish, sharing tons of tips and tricks along the way. We show you how to calculate the fabric needed (including pleats and pattern repeats) and then transform 1.5m-wide fabric rolls into beautiful double pinch pleat curtains – the same style that would cost us about £2000 if done professionally! (Spoiler: we spent around £600 on fabric, so we saved roughly £1400 by doing it DIY!) 👉 Materials & Checklist: We’ve got you covered with a complete list of all the materials, tools, and equipment used in this project. Check out the “Curtain DIY Checklist” video linked here • DIY Curtains Checklist for a detailed rundown, so you can gather everything you need before you start. (The checklist includes fabric type and amount, thread, sewing machine details, buckram, Wonderweb tape, hooks, and more.) What’s in this DIY curtain tutorial: Planning & Measuring: Learn how to measure your windows and calculate the material you’ll need for pleated curtains, including extra fabric for pleats, hems, and pattern matching. (UK fabric rolls are typically 1.5m wide, so we show how to work with panels. Cutting & Matching Panels: See how we cut and align multiple panels of patterned fabric so the seams are nearly invisible. We share tips for matching patterns at the seams and maximizing fabric width for wide windows. French Seams with a Standard Machine: Forget raw edges! Kat demonstrates easy French seams to join curtain panels – using just a regular sewing machine and iron – for a neat, durable finish with no fraying edges. Perfect for large curtains where you want a clean look on both sides. Adding the Header (Buckram): Watch how we insert fusible buckram into the top of the curtain for structure. Kat shows a simple way to create a stiff header for pleats without an overlocker (serger) – just a normal sewing machine and some ironing do the trick. Invisible Side Hems & Edges: Learn to make blind hems on the sides using Wonderweb (fusible web) and a blind stitch foot. This gives the curtains a polished, invisible stitched edge, and we did it all without a serger. Double Pinch Pleats by Hand: This is where the magic happens – Kat creates elegant double pinch pleats (French pleats) by hand stitching. She even uses a big spoon (a fun hack you have to see!). Hanging & Finishing Touches: Finally, we insert the pin hooks into the pleats and hang the curtains up. See how we steam the curtains (with our Tefal AeroSteam DT9814G1 garment steamer) to remove wrinkles and help them drape nicely. We don’t show the very last step (sewing the bottom hem) because we’re letting the curtains hang for two weeks with weights for a perfect drop, but we explain what that involves. Throughout the video, you’ll get personal insights and real-time troubleshooting from us as DIYers – it’s not just an instructional video, it’s also a bit of our home project journey. If you’re in the UK (or anywhere!) looking to make your own curtains, this tutorial will show you that you can achieve a bespoke, high-quality look yourself and have some fun doing it. We hope this step-by-step guide inspires you to try your hand at sewing curtains and helps you avoid costly mistakes. Thanks for watching!
