The GD&T Guy returns for his first video set to release in Spring of 2025! This is episode 1 of what is shaping up to be a four-part series addressing the aforementioned Guy's "big question" about GD&T, which is about whether it is always necessary to have datum references to constrain a part in all 6 degrees of freedom, even if that means assigning datum references to features that do not play a role in locating a part in assembly. In this video, the GD&T Guy introduces his case by showing that there is at least one example in which the ASME Y14.5 standard clearly answers "no." Maybe this all sounds esoteric at first but see if you can follow along! It is relevant to many, many parts and an expansive interpretation of the standard would allow for a cleaner approach to datum references - one that you could use every day. 04:57 Segment One: "3-2-1" Surface Feature Datum Reference 09:41 Segment Two: Tertiary Rotational Constraint 13:23 Segment Three: No Rotational Constraint 22:04 Segment Four: Non-Functional Features as Tertiary Rotation Constraint 27:25 Conclusions from Episode 1 Free, downloadable pdfs of some of the drawings discussed in these videos can be found at: https://www.mountaintopdevice.com/gdt...
