In order to measure variability, we will move from the sum of squares to the variance and then the standard deviation. The sum of squares gets rid of the negative numbers when we subtract from the mean. The variance is simply adding up all the sum of squares values. Finally, the standard deviation uses the square root of the variance to return us to the original units of measurement.
