In this video, I break down the Charmer Mode - what family systems therapy identifies as the "clown" role. Through my clinical work treating ADHD and complex PTSD, I've seen how this survival pattern can develop into what we might call mild borderline personality disorder in some cases. The Charmer is Mode 02 in my Survival Modality framework, and identifying these attachment dynamics beyond ADHD helps me work with someone's defense mechanisms more effectively. If you're the life of the party but can't stand being alone, if you need an audience to feel safe, this goes deeper than attention-seeking behavior - it shows you the nervous system mechanism that makes performance equal safety and solitude equal threat. You're the life of the party, but when everyone goes home, you can't stand being alone. This is The Charmer - ADHD Survival Mode 02. The Charmer Mode explained: Why your nervous system needs the spotlight, what happens when the party's over, and how to shift from performance-based safety to authentic connection. This is the second video in the Survivor Code series - 8 nervous system patterns that keep people with ADHD stuck in survival mode. It identifies 8 nervous system patterns that emerge to help us survive stress and maintain connection. As a psychotherapy modality it blends narrative therapy with somatic work, CBT, inner child therapy, and internal family systems. These aren't personality types. They're patterned adaptive survival responses that I've observed clinically and measured. Drop it in the comments. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎯 WHAT IS CHARMER MODE? The Charmer regulates through social performance. Safety is the spotlight. Around others, you're free, spontaneous, entertaining - but when the party ends, shame and self-loathing hit. You can't tolerate being alone. Intimate relationships struggle because you need an audience. Even one-on-one feels like performance. Domain Signature: High Group Dynamic Stabilization (GDS) High Cognitive Overcorrection (COC) Moderate Somatic Baseline (SB) Moderate Relational Vulnerability (RV) Low Emotional Suppression (ES) Low Interpersonal Vigilance (IV) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👨⚕️ ABOUT ME I'm Jonathan, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) specializing in ADHD diagnosis and treatment in adults. I also have ADHD myself. Traditional ADHD education is incredibly boring, which makes it nearly impossible for people with ADHD to actually learn from it. So I make content that actually holds your attention. What you'll find here: Medication information and optimization strategies Practical approaches that go beyond medication Understanding how ADHD overlaps with trauma and autism Zany antics from a prescriber who has lived it This is patient education for adults who need help and guidance. Not advertising, not LinkedIn posturing, just teaching in a way that works on YouTube. Still reading? I focus on adults because that's where I've spent my clinical time seeing what actually works. My work has expanded beyond medication management to include the common comorbidities: autism, complex PTSD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder. I've been developing my own framework blending behavioral science with attachment theory and group psychology - Developmental Reinforcement Theory, the Reinforcement Matrix, and Survival Code Modality. Eight patterns have emerged. It's evolving. Right now this lives on YouTube. Eventually it'll show up in other places too. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚠️ DISCLAIMER Educational content only.
