Once the busiest port in the world, today Liverpool is not known for its mass transit infrastructures. But, at the height of 19th Century industrialisation, this thriving trade mecca took on its transport challenges boldly. With miles of busy dockland along its riverfront, Liverpool needed a solution to the growing problem of overcrowding. The answer they came up with was innovative, hi-tech and efficient: the world's first elevated electric railway. Running for 11km (7 miles) from Seaforth to Dingle, where it briefly became an underground line, the Liverpool Overhead Railway was an instant hit with Liverpudlians. But by the 1960s it was gone, with barely a trace of it left.
