When I read Brandon Sanderson’s Rhythm of War I immediately became fascinated with the idea of pure tones and rhythms and the way they relate to each other. I tried to imagine how it could sound in actual songs. My first thought was that the pure tone of Stormlight is a tonic, Lifelight is the 5th (given how well Stormlight and Lifelight seem to fit in the Sibling) and the Voidlight is either major 7th or minor 2nd (which are more dissonant because Odium isn’t supposed to fit on Roshar). As for the rhythms, my immediate thought was that Voidlight needs to be a polyrhythm, and Stormlight is steady 4-4 beat, and when they come together we get the Rhythm of War. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that some things are missing in this approach. For instance, how to mix Lifelight and Voidlight in a musical and pleasantly sounding way, or what happens if all three come together? And what kind of sound and rhythm will we get if all 16 Shards are united? Which one will be the tonic then? But more importantly (for me personally) – how can this in-world tonal relationship be used in actual music inspired by the books or even the soundtrack for Stormlight Archives? After a lot of thinking I decided that this is how I would do it (and bear in mind, music is a hobby for me, in no way am I a pro at this, it’s just something I do for fun) 1. Tone. I decided that a specific note or tonal relationship would go over a lot of people’s heads, especially if they don’t know that they are supposed to be looking for those things. So I went for a vibe. I chose a scale and a sound for each three main lights. By sound, I mean instruments featured in each song. For instance, Voidlight – metal guitars and synths; Stormlight – an orchestra. Hybrid lights make use of a combination of these. For example, Warlight – metal guitars with an orchestra. 2. The rhythms. I decided to go for recognizable and not overly complicated rhythmic patterns for each song, however variation on that pattern is also acceptable. But I didn’t try to hard to preserve the pure lights’ rhythms when writing songs for hybrid lights. 3. Songs. Listening to one note in a repeated pattern is not that fun. So main lights must have full-fledged themes, hybrid lights are a combination of them. Songs have different sections to make them sound more musical and less like an exercise (which gives me more freedom to combine different sections together when making hybrid lights songs). And I wanted to make songs that are fun to listen to even without knowing the Stormlight Archives lore. Well… to the best of my ability. 4. On a personal note, I wanted to write what I know, and since I mostly play guitar, this instrument is heavily featured in my songs. I also used sopilka, a Ukrainian folk woodwind instrument, that I can play a little. And for the first time I tried to make an epic orchestral piece using midi and VSTs. 5. Each song represents both a certain light and a scene from the books, except for the hybrid of Cultivation’s and Odium’s lights and all three of them together, cause it hasn’t happened (yet?). I don’t think the actual soundtrack to the Stormlight Archive should be exactly what I made. This is my personal headcanon version of it, a representation of what plays in my head when I read the books. Listen to these songs on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/54Uz1J...
