Journey of seeds: From fields in Georgia to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault

https://www.fao.org/plant-treaty/en/ Native wheat varieties have nearly vanished from Georgia's fields, replaced by modern varieties developed by professional breeders. To rescue Georgia's crop varieties, the Scientific Research Centre of Agriculture (SRCA) applied for support from the Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF), a funding mechanism of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Farmers Natia and Shota, together with scientists, revived forgotten local wheat species and secured them for future generations. In February 2025, over 200 seed samples traveled from remote Georgian villages to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the Arctic Circle, the world’s largest seed reserve. By linking on-farm and gene bank conservation—including storage in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault— farmers and scientists, supported by the BSF project in Georgia, help ensure that local seeds remain available for future generations.
