I travel to Corozal, Honduras, to try to learn the Garifuna war dance, known as Yancunú or the Mask Dance. After becoming the first Japanese-American in Honduran history to receive an intensive course in the dance and drumming, the people of Corozal challenge me with a final exam: I must perform the dance in front of a crowd of Garifuna people. I'm given one week to train and learn about the dance. I visit the only Garifuna museum in Honduras, located in Corozal, to learn that Yancunú was invented in 1773 by Satuyé and his wife Barauda, both Garifuna leaders. Garifuna warriors used the dance in preparation for war against the Caribs and English on the island of Saint Vincent. In the Mask Dance, the men dress in masks, skirts, and shirts of many colors. Thank you Diego for being an incredible guide and friend in Corozal. Due to a lack of support and resources, each year less people dance the Yancunú in Honduras. Thanks to leaders like Diego, the Yancunú dance can live on in Honduras.
