How better conservations can bridge political divides | Rob Alexander, Ph.D. | TEDxBGSU

One does not have to be a close observer of American politics to recognize that we currently live in an era of very toxic politics. Many are afraid to discuss political matters, some have tuned out completely, and others have experienced strained relationships with loved ones due to political allegiances. Many of the vital signs associated with a healthy political system are currently in jeopardy and urgent action is necessary to change this trajectory. Fortunately, scholars have discovered solutions that foster greater understanding between partisans and suggest a way forward if we are to treat our current polarization pandemic. Robert Alexander is a professor of political science and the Founding Director of the Bowling Green State University Democracy and Public Policy Research Network at BGSU. His pioneering work on presidential electors has positioned him as an expert on the Electoral College. His book, Representation and the Electoral College (Oxford University Press, 2019) received stellar reviews and was chosen as an outstanding title by Choice Magazine for 2019. His research on electors was cited during arguments before the Supreme Court in 2020 and he has appeared as an expert on the Electoral College in numerous venues, including a feature-length documentary on CNN in 2020. He has published four books and his work has appeared in numerous academic journals. Dr. Alexander enjoys his work with students and has been recognized for his commitment to them, receiving multiple teaching awards over his career. He has served on the National Executive Committee for Pi Sigma Alpha (the national political science honor society) and on the National Liaison Advisory Board for The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. A frequent op-ed contributor, Professor Alexander's work has been published in USA Today, CNN.com, Newsweek, Real Clear Politics, and The Hill among many others. Dr. Alexander is often called upon by the media and his analysis has appeared in hundreds of print and television outlets including USA Today, CNN.com, NPR, the New York Times, BBC, Christian Science Monitor, US News and World Report, and CTV-Canada. He previously taught at Ohio Northern University where he was the Founding Director of the ONU Institute for Civics and Public Policy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
