​THE SHADOW OF OAKLANDS: A Kubrickian Nightmare - Abandoned Victorian Children's Home ​The abandoned Oaklands Children's Home in Lowton is a Victorian monstrosity that harbors dark secrets. Its sordid history of physical and sexual abuse scandals has left the house oozing a pervasive sense of dread, almost as if the building itself is watching. Architecturally stunning yet historically important to the local populace, the deeper you delve, the more the house reveals its secrets—including unsettling, 'people-under-the-stairs' style passages hidden within the walls. The vast scale of the place quickly becomes labyrinthian, a foreboding experience that begs the question: Why did I go in alone? ​This explore was the perfect setting for my filmmaking, an intense, self-made horror Urbex flick. The film is heavily influenced by the suffocating tension of Alfred Hitchcock, the architectural horror of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and the atmospheric dread of classic Hammer Horror.
