The British Ambassador, Peter Bateman, visited UAFA's Yasamal Centre today, one of the 6 CBR Centres contracted by the Ministry of Labour & Social Protection within the pilot project that was initiated by the Ministry of Finance and UAFA. This center established in 2004. http://fb.com/uafa.az Child Specialists here work closely with children with disabilities and their parents regarding develop these children's potentials and integration to society with the help of group and individual sessions. The family is taking part during the whole rehabilitation process of their child. Besides their participation, they are also trained about the problems and needs of the child how the parents can develop rehabilitation methods in household conditions, as well as about the rights and development of the child, advocacy etc. Gwen Burchell, Director of UAFA, spent time explaining the role of the Centre in using social models of rehabilitation and family support for children with disabilities and developmental delay. The Ambassador observed a group session for children and parents, run by foreign-trained child development specialists from UAFA, and learnt about the importance of play methodology in occupational therapy. The pilot State Contracting project demonstrates how to implement competitive, transparent and efficient mechanisms for purchasing social services from NGOs. The emphasis is on building quality and transparency into the system through a set of performance indicators -- UAFA's goal is to improve outcomes for the children and their families so that they are included and integrated into society. Many thanks to the British Ambassador for taking the time to visit UAFA. Also thanks to the Minister of Finance who, although unable to accompany Mr. Bateman, sent a personal letter of support.
