Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal, who were forced to immigrate in the 15th century as they did not choose Christianity, began to come to Ottoman lands with the encouragement of the Sultan, and settled in İzmir in the 17th century. Like as their common Jewish language, traditions and food, they built unique dwellings in large numbers in İkiçeşmelik, Karataş and Tilkilik regions to provide privacy and togetherness. These dwellings are called as “Kortejo” (meaning “Courtyard”) in Ladino, the Judaeo-Spanish language as called “Yahudihane” (Jewish Houses) in our language. Manisa Akhisar Hotel is one of the few remnants from this culture. It is accessed through a single door from outside around a single courtyard and through a single staircase. That building where boxy rooms of the families are lined up on the gallery floor with the common kitchen and toilet downstairs is a cultural heritage synthesizion of the architectural lines of Spain and Portugal with the accumulation of Izmir.
