Rebuild With Us campaign: https://www.nlc.org/program-initiativ... For America's cities, infrastructure is a priority that can't wait. North Port Vice-Mayor Linda Yates discusses why it's important to #RebuildWithUs. The City of North Port is a young, thriving community in southwest Florida. North Port was incorporated in 1959 and is approximately 105 square miles in land mass – making it one of the largest geographical cities in Florida. Sarasota County, where North Port is located, was recently named the 10th fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States! There are a lot of exciting things happening in the City. The Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility is currently being built in North Port and will open in 2019. Incredibly, the City is only 30% developed right now. All the growth, is creating a need for infrastructure improvements. The City’s stormwater drainage system and Price Boulevard Widening Project are just a few examples (both highlighted in the video). In regard to the drainage, after a thorough staff analysis, it is evident an increase in maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement of the drainage infrastructure is needed. The current infrastructure was installed 50-60 years ago, which includes corrugated metal drainage pipes. These pipes are prone to deterioration over time. Most of these older pipes are now in need of replacement. This aged infrastructure impacts citizens in a couple ways: -Increased flooding potential. Due to failing pipes, the stormwater drainage system is not as efficient as it needs to be. -Increased risk of roadway and property damage caused by failing pipes. In response, the City has developed a stormwater rehabilitation program that divides the City into grids. Each year a grid will be chosen for a complete infrastructure rebuild. This includes all aspects of the stormwater infrastructure, including the replacement of corrugated metal pipes. The projected budget of this program for the 2018/2019 fiscal year is $1.9 million, which is approximately 10% of the $19 million budget for the Operations Division. The City will continue this rebuild until all of the infrastructure is improved. North Port is also working on a widening project for Price Boulevard. It is currently a heavily used roadway and with future growth projections of the horizon – traffic won’t be getting any lighter. City leaders are now faced with the challenge of getting the project completed before traffic worsens, while still making sure the proper funding is available. The Federal Government and the State can help local jurisdictions like North Port by streamline the processes to receive funding that is available. It would also be helpful if the funding was allocated to improve not only the road infrastructure, but also for bridges, mobility and stormwater projects.
