If you're wondering how to fix cracks in drywall, watch our helpful video. Liesl, from Sherwin-Williams, makes repairing cracks in drywall easy with detailed instructions and helpful tips. How to fix cracks in drywall begins with choosing all the right tools and equipment needed for the DIY project. When repairing cracks in drywall, you'll need: shrink-free spackling, one-and-a-half inch to three-inch spackling knife (depending on the size of the crack), fine-grit sanding sponge and tack cloth. If the crack you're repairing is bigger such as a stress crack, you'll need fiber tape. The first step of how to fix cracks in drywall is spreading spackling with a putty knife. Hold the knife at an angle to fill the crack completely. Taper any excess spackling around the crack to get a smooth surface. It's very important to let the spackling dry before further working on repairing cracks in drywall. Smooth the surface with a fine grit sponge and wipe away the dust with tack cloth once dry. With the repairs done, you can repaint over the crack. Feather the paint lightly into the existing paint with a mini roller or paint brush. Emerald interior paint and primer in one from Sherwin-Williams is perfect to get the smoothest finish.
