Mount Garibaldi is an iconic landmark for outdoor adventurers on the West Coast of Canada. The Garibaldi Névé is this mountain's vast snowfield in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The névé along with its outlet glaciers have a combined area of about 30 square kilometres (12 square miles). To get a sense of the scale of this ice field, the following 9 glaciers are part of the Garibaldi Névé: Garibaldi Glacier, North Pitt Glacier, South Pitt Glacier, Lava Glacier, Sentinel Glacier, Warren Glacier, Bishop Glacier, Phoenix Glacie, Pike Glacier. Our journey travels 2 of these, across the entire Warren Glacier, up high onto the North Pitt Glacier, to the final upper slopes of Mt. Garibaldi. Our goal was to enjoy and document the vast, rugged, beauty of this place, and maybe ride out the ultimate garbage bag assisted glissade descent! The original plan was to fly onto Brohm ridge, traverse the Warren Glacier and camp on its Eastern flank, with a 4am start the next morning for the rest of the trek, and return. Last minute weather forecast changes predicted warmer temperatures, and more clouds, coming in for the second day, so the plan was adapted to an immediate lighter/faster out and back approach. The spectacular scenery, and glissade descent, did not disappoint! Here are some key moments: 4:53 – Up the high end of Brohm ridge and over Brohm pinnacle 8:02 – The transition onto snow/crampons, how we'll spend most of the day 10:35 – After first climbing, the route ideally follows the contours to gain the Warren, and then North Pitt Glacier efficiently. Being fairly early in the season, the snow pack accommodated this approach. 15:04 – The Table, with the Black Tusk behind and to the left. These are spectacular landmarks. 15:55 – Above 2100 meters the overnight temperature had been below -3C, but with a recent ~30cm of new snow, which had not consolidated. 16:35 – The Table, with the Black Tusk right behind. A cool angle. 14:47 – The ~200 meters of steeper vertical gain up to the North Pitt Glacier was steady post-holing above the knees 20:54 – 8 minutes of drone footage covering the scenery, and the final section of the standard North route up Mt. Garibaldi. These are the conditions on June 1st, 2025. Everything above here is fairly heavily crevassed, and changing, so roping up, with appropriate equipment and experience, is highly advisable. This is glacier, not benign snowfield. 20:57 – A good look at the bergschrund up top, usually passed on climber's right, that commonly makes this route to the summit of Mt. Garibaldi almost impassable by late July. 29:33 – Crashed the drone, again... Not sure why the collision avoidance ignored the snow entirely. The cause, in any case, was the ubiquitous "Contact with ground", or perhaps more accurately "Frozen fingers pilot error". ; ) 34:25 – The ultimate dollorama garbage bag assisted glissade descent! 47:21 – Snack of crisp bacon, with a view! 52:00 – Ladybug in the snow, with very poor prospects 52:31 – A few hundred meters further along, a humble lonesome tree provides a new, sunny, perch for our reluctant Ladybug. Safe onward travels! 54:08 – Transitioning back to rock for the rest of the way 57:50 – Ravens on Brohm ridge, on a beautiful evening descent 1:05:58 – Drone footage from the op of Brohm Pinnacle, also showing my nearby camp location at 1:07:15 1:12:11 – Roast for dinner! 1:13:17 – Sunset at 16X time-laps 1:14:46 – The ride home, sneaking in as the clouds build. There was no cell reception at the Brohm camp location, but line of sight and reception from the top of Brohm Pinnacle If you enjoyed this please consider hitting the like button and subscribing.
