Lifestyle changes and heart is a very relevant question in present times. Many of the patients are obese and overweight. It is known that body mass index is important in deciding whether the patient is overweight. It is always advised that somebody should be less than body mass index of 25 to stay healthy. Abdominal obesity or deposition of fat in the anterior part of the stomach is one of the high risk factors for having heart attack in later life with additional risk factors may be in the form of smoking, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and high cholesterol changes. So what are the lifestyle changes we are looking at? One is health promoting diet. This is to realise the fact that calories to be taken depending upon the physical activities of ours and the kind of diet should be more of a wholesome diet that is less of saturated fat, oil, more of fresh vegetables and fruits and in case of non vegetarians fish is a better option and to decrease the intake of red meat. Olive oils and Mediterranean diet also adds to it along with whole nuts. Exercise is a concept that has to come in the Indian population. We realise that in the West exercise and staying fit goes with normal day to day routine of them. People should realise and fall into a healthy routine to maintain a healthy heart. The general recommendations a re to do a normal aerobic exercise in the form of seventy five minutes per week. This moderate exercise could be in the form of a brisk walking somewhere around 5 to 6 kilometres, around 30 minutes a day for 5 times a week along with some recessive kind of exercises involving the major muscle groups of the body. It is also known that in the present lifestyle to attain this kind of prescribed regime. This could be on Saturdays and Sundays that the patient could do a much better exercise for a prolonged time. Although you may not be able to do the full prescribed regimen, although in small bits in as much ever time and as much frequency in a week is done, it is good for the heart. So regular exercise and balanced diet is a key to healthy heart.
