Have you ever wondered what might happen if the delicate connection between your brain and body broke? If you told your hand to move, and instead it jumped? If you told your feet to walk, and instead they danced? After spending years training as a classical clarinettist, Liza found that their brain had other ideas. Twitching hands made playing impossible and could lead to unconsciousness or worse. Eventually they were diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy, triggered by the very hand movements they use to play. Determined to learn how to make music again, Liza started searching for a way to retrain their brain, mapping out the glitches in a musical game of snakes and ladders. This recovery process led them to composition through improvisation. The musical sections of 'Ten Thousand Hours' are each drawn stylistically from different stages of this transformation, moving from the classical to the electronic. This arrangement was composed especially for Sage Summer Studios 2022, with Liza playing both a traditional wooden recorder and her self-designed and built instrument, the roborecorder. 'Ten Thousand' Hours is a short excerpt from Liza’s live musical performance and short story, INNERVATE, created with the support of Help Musicians UK Fusion Fund. Liza Bec recorded 'Ten Thousand Hours' at Sage Gateshead as part of our 2022 Summer Studios – a free, week-long residency at Sage Gateshead for emerging and independent artists to create new work, develop their practice or prepare for a performance.
