In 1949 the American M9 respirator was put into service, containing many of the good features that was in previous American respirators, the M9 was comfortable, had a Tissot system combined with an oral-nasal cup and most importantly could take 60mm filters directly to the left cheek of the mask (a left handed version with a right filter port was also made). After only about a decade of service the US military replaced the M9 with the lacklustre M17, although the M9 would stay in limited service until the M40 finally replaced both it and the M17. In this video I show some examples of foreign copies and improvements to the M9 gas mask, notable examples being the Finnish M61 V3 and the Serbian/Yugoslavian M2 gas mask. Each an even better version of the M9, so this video looks at what could have happened if the US continued to improve the M9 rather than going with the absurd M17.
