In January 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI ordered his predecessor's grave opened. They exhumed the nine-month-old corpse of Pope Formosus, dressed it in papal robes, propped it upright in a throne, and put it on trial for crimes against the Church. A deacon stood behind the rotting body and answered questions on behalf of the dead pope while Stephen screamed accusations at the corpse. This is the Cadaver Synod, the trial of a dead pope and it's one of the most disturbing examples of institutional madness in history. IN THIS VIDEO YOU'LL LEARN: How Pope Stephen VI put a nine-month-old corpse on trial in 897 AD Why the Catholic Church exhumed Pope Formosus's decomposed body The political power struggle between Italian noble families over the papacy How a deacon was forced to speak on behalf of the corpse during the trial Why they cut off three fingers from the dead pope's hand How the corpse was dragged through Rome and thrown in the Tiber River The theological chaos: thousands of priests suddenly "weren't priests" Why Pope Stephen VI was strangled in prison six months later What this reveals about institutional corruption and systemic madness 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING: "Liber Pontificalis" (Book of the Popes) 9th century papal chronicle "Annals of Fulda" - contemporary Carolingian chronicle documenting the synod "The Cadaver Synod: The Strangest Trial in History" by various medieval historians "The Bad Popes" by E.R. Chamberlin (1969) "A History of the Popes" by John Julius Norwich Papal succession records 872-965 AD Medieval canon law documentation on papal legitimacy Reflect: The Cadaver Synod wasn't just one insane pope. It was an entire institutional system cardinals, bishops, deacons, scribes participating in obvious madness because they were too afraid to object. Sound familiar? How many modern institutions are one bad leader away from their own grotesque theater? How many smart, educated people participate in systemic insanity because the cost of objecting is too high? ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This video contains discussion of corpse desecration, decomposition, institutional violence, political murder, and religious corruption. All facts are supported by medieval historical sources.
