A purely bamboo fire. For the Year of the Fire Horse, last night I decided to burn my bamboo offcuts. I started it with split bamboo — thin, flexible canes that catch almost instantly — and it really kicked off. Within minutes the flames were leaping to person-height. Then I added the big piece of Java Black you see in the video. What struck me was how different it felt from a wood fire. The flames were a brighter orange, with slightly whiter tips. The embers glowed a pinkish red. Everything moved faster — more flicker, more energy. Working with bamboo every day, I often feel the material carries a strong vitality.
