This is one of the most fun, facinating and puzzling questions in all of paleontology, but there are clues. Looking at animals in the world today, we can see patterns of behaviour, camouflage and display colouration which can help guide us to understanding large Dinosaurs such as Tyranosaurus Rex a little bit better. We also can observe the fossil record and some fossilised colour pigments and melanosomes to not only know what colour SOME dinosaurs are (Like Psittacosaurus, Microraptor, Sinosauropteryx and more...) and see patterns in what colours and counter shading they have in the deep past and compare it to today. In this episode Elliott is joined by Dr George Hancock from the University of Exeter. He is a visual ecologist working on extant species ranging from birds to butterflies, but also has a passion for the prehistoric. Because of this he and Lindsay Kastroll who works on the Prehistoric Kingdom games (both met working on the Minecraft: Fossils and Archaeology Mod) have founded the CamoDinoProject, a toolbox to help work out what patterns would work best for different dinosaurs in different enviroments while also working as a science outreach tool for schools and universities. Download the .zip file from GitHub, extract the file and then navigate to the ImageJ.exe file contained within the folder/subfolder. Run ImageJ.exe and the game will launch. You can play one of two games, a how fast can you spot the velociraptor game (sneaky thief) or a which psittacosaurus do you think is best game (rankosaurus). Note 1, for each game you can choose a forest or a desert habitat. Note 2, to preview your results you must play atleast two generations.
