Aureliano Pertile (1885-1952,) is considered even today, over 60 years after his death, to have been a great tenor, one of the most important tenors of the 20th century. If you listened to the interview I posted several days ago with Stella Roman, provided to me by Steve at Shicoff 1, you will have heard her say that he was one of the greatest actors she ever sang with. This is high praise generally for an opera singer, and indicates that his was not simply a vocal gift, but went much deeper than that. A look at a good discography will reveal that from his many recordings, there is a predominance of highly dramatic pieces that do not rely on extremely high notes for their effectiveness. There is even a fair dose of Wagner. He was essentially a B natural tenor, but one who used his voice brilliantly. He actually sings this famous aria transposed down one full tone on this recording, which is somewhat unusual, but it does not seem to detract at all from the impression he creates.
