I actually did one of these a couple of years ago but noticed after the fact that I had performed a slightly newer version of Kanku than the original. One technique was done differently 4 times; if you saw my earlier video and can you tell which one, instant promotion for you (okay, I'm kidding - don't want your organization upset at me)! I first learned Kanku around 1975 from Shihan Bobby Lowe in Hawai'i. Kyokushin's Kanku kata evolved from Shotokan's version that in turn descended from the Okinawa Te form "Kushanku," which was named after an influential Chinese military official (his name and/or title) in Okinawa during the mid-1700s. Kushanku taught Chinese military arts to to an Okinawan martial artist named Sakugawa; based on these lessons, Sakugawa created the kata Kushanku (AKA "Kusanku" or "Kosokun") to pass on his teachings. Later as an old man, Sakugawa taught the form to an exceptional teenager named Matsumura. A grown-up Matsumura would later teach Itosu and Asato who later taught Funakoshi (founder of Shotokan Karate, he changed the kata name to "Kanku") who later taught Oyama (founder of Kyokushin Karate) who later taught Lowe who later taught me this venerated kata. The techniques and tactics of this form, and thus its appearance, has evolved over the centuries. This version of Kanku kata is documented in the book "Advanced Karate," published in 1967 and written by the great Masutatsu Oyama. OSS! and Aloha!
