Performed March 2, 2025 Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland Music by Karl Suessdorf & Words by John Blackburn Arranged by Darmon Meader Lyricist John M. Blackburn (1913-2006) and composer Karl A. Suessdorf (1911-1982) wrote “Moonlight in Vermont” in 1944, but not for the contemporary movie musical of the same name. The song is frequently played at Vermont wedding receptions and is considered the unofficial state song. When the legislature voted on making it the official song, the measure failed on the grounds that the melody was too hard to sing!
