The bit of wall behind the chimney breast in my bedroom has been damp since I moved in, slowly getting more and more unpleasant. As I've nearly finished the bathroom I want to sort the leak out so the wall has time to dry out. Then I will be able to repair the wall, paint it, treat myself to a bit of new carpet and be done with the top floor. A combination of cracked slates and sagging felt had created an easy route for water to get in. I used some lead to support the perished felt and replaced the broken slates, provided by my neighbour Jeremy, a renowned architect and extremely handy neighbour who designed the roof and extension of the house in 1979. Hopefully replacing the broken slates alone will be enough to stop the problem, but the lead should provide a bit of extra protection.. sooner or later the whole roof will need to come off so the idea here is just to stop the leaks until then.
