Work is Everywhere | The Joy and Purpose of Labor

Work is everywhere. From shining shoes on a sunny Dallas patio to watching a skilled bolero at work in Oaxaca, this video reflects on the quiet dignity, rhythm, and purpose found in everyday labor. In this episode, I move between small acts of work: washing my car, changing a tire, visiting street vendors, and observing the ritual precision of a shoe shine. Some labor is paid, some unpaid, but all of it connects us to the material world and to each other. Through repetition, texture, and physical effort, work becomes more than a chore, it becomes a form of presence, even a kind of performance. As a working-class artist living between the U.S. and Mexico, I’m interested in how ordinary tasks reveal deeper meaning: the sensuality of soap and water, the rhythm of cloth on leather, the geometry of tools meeting machines. Even my dog Juqui has her role in offering emotional support at the end of a long day’s work. This video is part of my ongoing exploration of creative living, labor as meaning, and the shared human experience of work across cultures.
