Vee Hey provides an explanation to Debbie Harris of Autumna, on how the butterfly model works for the care of dementia sufferers at The Huntington and Langham Estate in Hindhead. For help finding care homes that support people living with dementia, use the Autumna directory of every registered care provider in the UK: https://www.autumna.co.uk/free-shortl... 00:00 What is the Butterfly Model for dementia care? 00:18 How does the Butterfly Model works in a care home? 01:00 How do care home residents respond to the Butterfly Method? 01:26 How would I know if the Butterfly Method is being used in a care home? The butterfly ethos in a care home is about it being one big family. The residents and the staff are all one big family. They all work together, and all live together. For instance, the staff don't wear uniforms. They don't wear badges that say 'I'm a Manager' or 'I'm a Carer.' They sometimes wear tiny 'Butterfly' brooches to identify them as staff if necessary. The visitor's book will show the staff, not in uniform, but of them at home, on holiday, or at a wedding, for example. The Butterfly Method tries to be less about institution and more about informality. The staff sit with residents at lunchtime. They don't wait on residents and leave them to have their lunch on their own. They actually spend time with people as they would in their own homes. The other side of the Butterfly Model is that residents are encouraged to be part of the care home. A great example might be letting residents help the housekeeping team. It's about involving them in things they would do in their home. It's making sure that people feel it is home. It's the caregivers sharing their lives with the residents of the dementia care home.
