However, the 35-year-old driver, Nicholas Sides, attempted to flee, leading to a pursuit that ended when he crashed into a backyard near Sansom Park. As he exited the vehicle, he immediately opened fire on officers before they had a chance to stop. The police attempted to de-escalate the situation by giving Sides multiple commands, but he ignored them, got back into the car, pointed a gun at his head, and drove past the officers. This initiated a second pursuit, which ended at a residence in the 1700 block of Skyline Dr. in Fort Worth, where Sides barricaded himself inside. The Fort Worth Crisis Intervention Team and SWAT arrived at the scene while officers from multiple agencies set up a perimeter around the house. For several hours, police negotiated in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. At one point, Sides ignited fireworks both outside and inside the home. Eventually, he emerged with a gun to his head and again refused to comply with police commands. SWAT deployed 40mm less-lethal rounds in an attempt to disarm him, but Sides responded by firing his weapon in the direction of the officers. In response, a SWAT officer fired a single shot, striking Sides in the torso. Medical aid was provided on-site before he was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
