It begins with people, hunger, and the sea. This documentary traces the long and often overlooked history of trawling, from the earliest evidence of net fishing along rivers and coasts, through centuries of sail-powered work, to the industrial transformation brought by steam and steel. Grounded in real working boats and the lived experience of fishermen, the film explores how trawling evolved slowly for thousands of years, limited by wind, weather, and human endurance. and how that balance changed abruptly in the nineteenth century. As engines replaced sails, and machinery replaced muscle, fishing grounds expanded, catches increased, and pressure on the sea intensified. Warnings emerged early, from fishermen and scientists alike, but the scale of industrial trawling moved faster than regulation, faster than memory, and faster than recovery. This is not a story of villains or heroes. It is a story of work, technology, consequence, and of a relationship between people and the sea that continues to shape our world today.
