Stoneware made in Red Wing, Minnesota, remains popular with collectors today. However, most people have no idea where the clay that made up these treasures came from. An exceptional deposit of clay was discovered in the late 1800s near the town of Claybank, Minnesota. This deposit fed the stoneware and sewer pipe factories that grew in Red Wing. Transporting this clay started with horse teams, then evolved to using the Duluth, Red Wing and Southern railroad. Learn more about the history, geology, and people of Goodhue County that were involved with the development of the clay pits and the various Red Wing Stoneware and Pottery industries.
