Shadow and I Rockhound for Hematite Jasper, a heavy, iron rich, dull rock that when tumbled and polished shines like a mirror! The location we rockhound was off Gold Strike Road just North of Gunlock, Utah, and Hematite Jasper was in abundance. Hematite is Fe2O2 (two Iron Molecules and Two Oxygen Molecules). Simply put, it contains a lot of iron and is HEAVY! Hematite Jasper is Hematite combined with Jasper. In this case, mostly red Jasper. At first glance, the rock looks dull and rather unattractive. But put it in the tumbler for a few weeks and out comes a beautiful, mirror like shiny rock with inlaid bands of red jasper and black hematite. It is beautiful! And it's also a lot of fun to find. Come along with me and Shadow while we find Hematite Jasper in the Southwest corner of Utah. Topics covered: What is Hematite?
