On Thursday 7th November the Mercy Primary School (Junior and Senior) celebrated its diverse number of nationalities from over 40 different counties. International Day at the Mercy was celebrated with a Food Fair in the morning, followed by a Cultural Concert in the midday. Some of the countries represented were; Brazil, Ukraine, Moldova, Croatia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Poland, Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China, Vietnam, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Myanmar and of course Ireland. For the Food Fair, families and pupils cooked dishes from around the world and shared them with the school. A huge thank you to Peppers Indian Restaurant, Bell Pepper Thai Restaurant, Mercury Food Distr. LTD, Spice World and Asian Food Market for kindly donating to the event. Everyone enjoyed discovering the delicious cuisine from new countries-full bellies and smiling faces abounded! The Cultural Concert included Classical Dance from Kerala India, Nigerian Tribal Dancing, Polish Folk Dances, Ukrainian singing, musical performance of the Chinese Guzheng, Brazilian Funk and so much more. Another huge thank you to the Waterford New Community Network for organising a guest performance for the event- Osas Iyamu Usideme from Nigeria who works as an Intercultural Health Advocate. Much gratitude to Osas for her “One Day as an African Princess” dress-up workshop and her Nigerian storytelling performance on stage.
