The carvings were started in the sixth year of Chunxi in the Southern Song Dynasty (1179) and took more than 70 years. The founder was Zhao Zhifeng, a famous monk in Shuzhong during the Song Dynasty. Baoding Mountain is one of the holy places of Buddhism. There is a saying that "go to Emei Mountain and go to Baoding Mountain". Baodingshan Stone Carvings have 13 landscapes with Dafowan as the center.
