(25 Jun 2021) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4332418 LaTonya Floyd, George Floyd's older sister sobbed during victim impact statements, while watching the sentencing of former Minneapolis Police office Derek Chauvin, the man convicted of killing her brother. The punishment — which fell short of the 30 years prosecutors had requested — came after Chauvin broke his more than yearlong silence in court to offer condolences to the Floyd family. He also said more information will be coming out and he hopes the family will eventually have "some peace of mind." With good behavior, Chauvin, 45, could get out on parole after serving two-thirds of his 22 1/2 year sentence, or about 15 years. LaTonya scoffed during Chavuin's statement to the court and at Chavin's mother beseeching the judge for a merciful sentence. " He killed my brother," LaTonya Floyd said, " He killed me." Floyd's sister watched the proceedings from the office of her church pastor in Houston, alongside her friend the pastor's daughter. LaTonya broke into tears about how she copes when hearing the circumstances of her brother's death during court testimony and today during the sentencing. She referenced the statement of Floyd's young, surviving daughter Gianna, who delivered a vicim impact statement through a recorded conversation. "This is just something you just don't get over. You don't get past it," LaTonya Floyd said. "You know. Oh man, hm. I'm like Gianna said (Floyd's daughter), oh I see him because I got to hold on to something." Just blocks away in the Third Ward Houston neighborhood where George Floyd grew up, friend Kim Hewitt listened to the hearing through her phone, playing it out on a loudspeaker for everyone to hear next to her food stall, a restaurant called "The Brunch Box." Hewitt found no solace in the 22 and half year sentence the judge imposed on Chauvin. She said she prays the other officers charged in connection with Floyd's death face justice. "We still got three more, because you got to understand they stood there and allowed that to happen," Hewitt said.
