Book Review: “Jesus and John Wayne” by Kristin Kobes Du Mez

A #bookreview of @kristin_dumez’s “Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.” This book was a searing look at why so many white Christians in the U.S. latched onto Trump. It also looked into some of the more “exotic” (from my non-American perspective) aspects of American Evangelicalism, such as the gender roles obsession, the sexual purity movement (I couldn’t stop laughing at Tim and Beverly LaHaye’s “The Act of Marriage” sex guide), and the tendency to fall into conspiracy theories. I plan to write a non-fiction book exploring the relationship between anti-intellectualism and the American idea of freedom, and how Americans’ idea of freedom is related to entitlement on both the left and the right.
