Visiting Kathmandu's Sacred Hilltop Temples - Swayambhunath!

Want to know what it is like to wander around the ancient Swayambhu Stupa? You will soon see why it is nicknamed the Monkey Temple, as there are monkeys everywhere! After a quick lesson in Nepali counting, I climb to the ancient Manjushri Shrine with magnificent views over Kathmandu city. Entering the main Swayambhu complex, I meet a metalworker carving singing bowls, wander through shrines and explore souvenir stalls. I circle the golden pagoda of the Hindu Hariti Temple with the mesmerising chants from a Buddhist monastery filling the air. Circumambulating Swayambhu Stupa, I spin age-old prayer wheels, chat with souvenir vendors, and learn the difference between a 100 and 500 rupee note the hard way! I then descend the 365 steps, amongst frolicking monkeys and friendly Nepali locals, to street level. There I take our minibus back to Thamel, chatting with our friendly guide along the way.
