On November 16th 1983, England travelled to Luxembourg for a European Championship qualifier that looked routine on paper. But the football quickly became irrelevant. Thousands of England supporters had travelled across Europe for the game, far more than the small country of Luxembourg expected. What followed became one of the most chaotic England away trips of the 1980s. Violence erupted across Europe in the days before the match. Shops were looted, cars overturned and police officers attacked as disorder spread. Authorities were forced to mobilise around 600 police officers and soldiers, including members of the Luxembourg Army, in an attempt to regain control. In this documentary we examine what really happened during the Luxembourg riot of 1983, using historical reports, media coverage and first-hand recollections from supporters who were there. This is the story of one of the most notorious England away days of the 1980s. Were you there that night? If you travelled to Luxembourg for the match, share your memories in the comments. These stories survive because the people who were there continue to tell them. And if you enjoy football history and stories from the terrace era, please Like the video and Subscribe.
