The world's longest teakwood footbridge spanning 1.2 km across Lake Taungthaman at Amarapura near Mandalay, Myanmar. Built in 1841 by Mayor U Bein of salvaged timber from the old palace at Ava when King Bodawpaya moved the capital to Amarapura, it is a popular tourist destination for both local and foreign visitors. The lake swells during the monsoons sometimes rising above the boards but shrinks in the summer and crops are grown on the dry bed. Most of the large teak gang planks fixed lengthwise along the windy bridge have been replaced with narrow strips of timber placed across but most of the 1060 original posts still remain. Zayats or rest houses and benches are conveniently located along its length. You can visit Taungthaman Village, Kyauktawgyi Pagoda and sample palm toddy on the eastern shore at the end of the bridge.
