Recent college program graduate Malachi Whitson took inspiration from the popular anime series Naruto for several of his masters recital presentations, including the original composition "Forgiveness." Whitson is featured on drums along with his classmates Paul Cornish on piano, Emma Dayhuff on bass and Lenard Simpson on alto saxophone. This spring saw the first-ever virtual masters recitals in our college program's 25-year history. Each student in the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA's Class of 2020 presented original compositions performed with their classmates while observing social distancing. The recitals were conducted via Zoom for UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music faculty including Institute Chairman and distinguished professor Herbie Hancock, music department chair Travis J. Cross, Global Jazz Studies chair Steven Loza and professor Eddie S. Meadows, among others. Learn more about the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance: https://hancockinstitute.org/educatio...
