This phenomenon is known as angular dependence of polarized light. What is this, and why is this important? Let’s discuss the latter first. This finding, maybe the only way you’re able to identify a melanoma in a purely pink lesion, nevoid melanoma (as the lesion appears as a benign nevus), and aids in identification of basal cell carcinoma. Shiny white structures (SWS) are only apparent in polarized dermoscopy, however, these structures are not always present upon initial inspection. Why? Thats the phenomenon, angular dependence. SWS occur secondary to changes in collagen, as polarized light interacts with it. Collagen birefringent properties splits polarized light in two directions. As you rotate your dermatoscope on a lesion these will come in and out of focus if they’re present (angular dependence).
