Access to primary care services During the COVID-19 pandemic, primary care services, i.e. your doctor, dentist, optician and pharmacy are working in a different way to prevent the spread of the disease and protect patients and staff, while still providing the essential services we need. They will have social distancing measures in place, and healthcare staff will also be wearing protective clothing including face masks. You may also be asked to wear a face covering if you go to visit a healthcare professional. As the use of face masks by health professionals can be challenging for patients who are deaf or hearing impaired, please alert the health professional to your concerns prior to your visit so that alternative communication techniques, such as visual aids, writing things down, speech to text apps, or a sign language translator can be discussed and considered. Clear face masks may be available in some services to support lip reading.
